Members cite Flanagan’s continued commitment to children, families and working people
St. Paul, MN – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Minnesota State Council is excited to announce its endorsement of Peggy Flanagan in her run for the Minnesota House in 46A, a district where hundreds of SEIU members live and work. SEIU members and leaders chose to endorse Flanagan at this time so they can begin talking to their neighbors about Flanagan’s proven track record as a progressive leader who has been a longtime advocate for issues important to working families in our state. With their endorsement, SEIU members highlighted Flanagan’s drive and desire to be a champion at the capitol for children, families and working people across the state.
Nate Mathias is a Pre-K teacher and a member of SEIU Local 284 who lives in the district with his wife and two kids.
“As a Pre-K teacher and a parent, I am excited that my legislative district has the opportunity to elect a champion for children and education like Peggy Flanagan,” said Mathias. “As I’ve become more engaged in the political process and had a chance to advocate for real investments in education funding at the capitol, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to have tireless representatives in the legislature who are willing to do the work to make sure our students are valued and put ahead of misplaced priorities like tax giveaways for corporations that will further compromise our children and their opportunities in the future. Peggy has proven over the years that she is dedicated to fighting for working families, especially children and underrepresented communities that are too often left out of the conversation at the capitol. I look forward to talking with my neighbors about why I am supporting Peggy and then continuing to work with her at the capitol next year to fight to make our community, and our state, one that provides opportunity for all residents.”
Louise Duffie is a nursing home worker in the district and a member of SEIU Healthcare Minnesota. She has lived in St. Louis Park with her family for over 25 years.
“I’ve seen Peggy in action, so I know that she has been a consistent fighter for causes that lift up families, children and working people,” said Duffie. “We are at a critical time in our state, and we need champions like Peggy to fight for important issues like proper funding for our healthcare system to address our coming age wave in a way that doesn’t leave behind any patients or workers. I’ve seen her values at work, and know that they begin and end with doing what is right for everyday people who often get left out of debates at the capitol. Whether focusing on healthcare, education, housing or any number of issues that face our community and state, I’m confident Peggy will be a great leader and will use this position to make our state a more equal, just and fair place to live. I’m excited for my community to send someone like Peggy to St. Paul and look forward to working to make it happen.”
“Peggy’s work as Co-Chair of the Raise the Wage Coalition, and her commitment to indexing the wage to inflation, made clear that she is willing to do the hard work to improve the lives of working people in Minnesota,” said Kevin Chavis, a SEIU Local 26 member who is a delegate to the SEIU Minnesota State Council, the body that voted unanimously to endorse Flanagan. “In our work to make Minnesota a state that works for all of us, not just rich corporations, we need as many champions at the capitol as possible. I am confident Peggy will be that champion, and look forward to seeing what she will get done as the next Representative from 46A.”
SEIU members are employed in a variety of occupations at facilities throughout the state, including:
- Hospital, clinic, nursing home and in-home support workers (SEIU Healthcare MN)
- Public School support staff and early childhood education workers (SEIU Local 284)
- Commercial and public building maintenance employees, security officers and other property service workers (SEIU Local 26)
With this endorsement, SEIU members in the district will be talking with their fellow members in 46A about the election process and how they can be involved in helping elect a progressive leader like Peggy Flanagan as the next Representative for district 46A in the Minnesota House.
