Members cite commitment to closing opportunity gaps
Minneapolis, Minn. – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Minnesota State Council is excited to announce its endorsement of Iris Altamirano for one of the Minneapolis School Board At-Large seats up for election in 2014. Around 5,000 SEIU members live and work in Minneapolis. Following a member-driven screening process, SEIU endorsed Altamirano because of her clear vision for strong public schools that support all students in Minneapolis. As Minneapolis continues to face daunting opportunity gaps, SEIU members highlighted Altamirano’s experience and passion in fighting for equity in their endorsement of her campaign.
“Our members know Iris and she knows us both as union members and parents. Our union is majority people of color – so the achievement gap is not theoretical. Those are our kids,” said Minneapolis resident Harrison Bullard, a security officer and member of SEIU Local 26. “We know Iris will fight for them and for all Minneapolis kids.”
“As someone who works in the Minneapolis Public Schools, I know the need for strong members of the School Board in our quest to create a system where all students in our city can thrive, and I’m confident Iris will be that advocate,” said Minneapolis resident Ginia Klamecki, who works in the Minneapolis School District Student Nutrition program and is a member of SEIU Local 284. “Her firm commitment to equity and strong experience standing with working families will make her an excellent School Board member.”
“SEIU members who work in Minneapolis Public Schools strongly believe that Iris is the best pick for the Minneapolis School Board At-Large seat up for election this year,” said Frank Miskowiec, Political Director at SEIU Local 63, the union of workers who clean and maintain Minneapolis schools. “We’ve seen Iris’s passion on early childhood education and expanding the High Five program and know she will advocate every day for Minneapolis students. She has proven experience fighting for social justice and civil rights that we believe will be a great addition to the Minneapolis School Board.”
SEIU members are employed in a variety of occupations at facilities throughout the state, including:
- Minneapolis Public School maintenance employees (SEIU Local 63)
- Hospital, clinic, nursing home and in-home support workers (SEIU Healthcare MN)
- Public School support staff and early childhood education workers (SEIU Local 284)
- Commercial and public building maintenance employees, security officers and other property service workers (SEIU Local 26)
